Which typing game should my child start with?

Pick by what your child can already do on the keyboard, not by age. A child who still looks for each letter needs single keys; a child who reads well but types slowly needs short words with a forgiving speed.

Typing practice for kids: a 10-minute routine

Short and regular beats long and rare. This is the routine we suggest for typing practice for kids at home or in a classroom corner:

  1. 3 minutes, one lesson. Open the next typing lesson and finish it once. Lessons 1–10 cover the home row, the top and bottom rows and first words.
  2. 5 minutes, one game. Play a game from the list above that uses the same skill: letters after lessons 1–6, words after lessons 7–10.
  3. 2 minutes, check the pet. Each finished round adds care points. The pet hatches into a chick at 50 points, a bunny at 200 and a fox at 600, so a few days of practice shows visible progress in the Pet Room.

Practising on consecutive days also builds a daily streak in the Pet Room, which is often the reason a child asks to practise the next day.

Why kids learn faster with typing games

The games here are built so that a wrong key slows you down instead of ending the game. In Car Racing the car stalls until the right letter is typed; in CyberNinja a mistake resets the word. Children learn the rule that matters most for touch typing (accuracy first, speed later) without being told it.

Feedback is immediate and visual: the car moves, the ship explodes, the shield holds. That gives young typists a reason to keep their eyes on the screen instead of on their hands, which is the habit that separates touch typing from hunt-and-peck.

A kids typing test without the pressure

When your child is ready to see a number, use the typing test. The 15-second and 1-minute modes are short enough for younger children, and the result shows words per minute and accuracy. Compare a child with their own last result, not with an adult benchmark.
