1 Minute Typing Test

Sixty seconds, real sentences, an honest WPM score. Click the box (or just start typing) and the clock begins with your first key.

How the one minute typing test works

The timer starts on your first keystroke and stops at exactly 60 seconds. The text comes from classic public-domain novels, so you type real sentences with capitals, commas and quotation marks instead of a list of random words. That makes the result closer to how you type an email or a report.

Your score is net WPM: every five correct characters (spaces included) count as one word, and mistakes you leave behind do not count. Next to it you get accuracy, raw WPM (everything you typed, errors included) and keystrokes per minute.

What is a good score on a 1 minute typing test?

Most adults land between 35 and 45 WPM on a one minute test. Because sixty seconds is short, a quick burst can lift your number by a few words compared with a longer test, so treat the 1 minute result as your peak speed.

1 minute WPMWhat it usually means
Under 20Beginner: still looking at the keys; start with the home row lesson
20-34Developing; a few weeks of lessons makes a big difference
35-44Average; around the adult average of about 40 WPM
45-59Above average; fine for general office work (45-60)
60-79Fast; chat support, data entry, and transcription from 65
80+Very fast; 100 and above is elite

Can you pass a 30 WPM typing test?

30 WPM is a minimum you mostly see on jobs with light keyboard use, such as front-desk and retail roles; general office work usually starts at 45 WPM and live chat support at 55. In one minute that is 150 correct keystrokes, roughly two lines of a paperback page. If you are at 25 WPM today, the gap is usually accuracy rather than finger speed: slow down until you reach 95% accuracy, then let the speed come back.

A one minute run is a good check before an application. To prove the speed holds up, repeat it on the 3 minute typing test, which is closer to what employers actually use.

1 minute vs 3 minute vs 5 minute

Use the 1 minute test for a daily warm-up and to track your top speed. Use the 3 minute test to check that the speed lasts, and the 5 minute typing test when you want the same conditions as a job assessment. Compare your scores only with tests of the same length. Then check where your result lands on the typing speed chart from 20 to 120 WPM.

Frequently asked questions

How many words is a 1 minute typing test?

There is no fixed word count: you type as much as you can in 60 seconds. At the adult average of about 40 WPM that is 40 words, or about 200 keystrokes.

Is a 1 minute typing test accurate?

It is accurate for your short-burst speed. Scores usually drop a few WPM on longer tests as fatigue and harder sentences appear, so use the 3 or 5 minute test for job applications.

Do mistakes lower my score?

Yes. Only correctly typed characters count toward net WPM. You can fix a mistake with Backspace before you press space; uncorrected errors are shown in red and lower your accuracy.
