3 Minute Typing Test
Three minutes is long enough to show your steady speed, not just a sprint. Start typing and the timer begins with your first key.
Why take a three minute typing test?
A three minute typing test sits between a quick burst and a full job assessment. It is long enough that a lucky sentence cannot carry your score, and short enough that you can repeat it every day. That makes it the best length for tracking progress week by week.
The passages are drawn from classic public-domain novels, mixed so you will not see the same text twice in a row. Scoring is net WPM: five correct characters equal one word, and errors you do not fix are left out.
3 minute typing test 68 WPM: what does that score mean?
68 WPM over three minutes is roughly 204 words, or about 1,020 correct keystrokes, with no long pauses. That is in the fast band, well above the 40 WPM adult average, and clears the bar for general office and admin jobs, which usually ask for 45-60 WPM. Transcription roles typically list 65-80 WPM, so a steady 68 puts you in that range.
If you hit 68 on a one minute run but drop to the high 50s here, your speed is real but your stamina is not there yet. Practise with longer texts in the typing paragraph practice lesson.

Tips for a better three minute result
- Keep your eyes on the text, not the keyboard. Looking down costs more time than any typo.
- Fix errors only inside the current word. Going back two or three words costs more than the error itself.
- Breathe and keep an even rhythm. Speeding up on easy words and stalling on hard ones lowers your average.
- Warm up first with the 1 minute typing test, then move on to the 5 minute test when three minutes feels comfortable.
Frequently asked questions
How many words should I type in a 3 minute typing test?
At 40 WPM you will type about 120 words in three minutes; at 60 WPM about 180. The test counts every correct character, so the exact word count depends on word length.
Is 3 minutes long enough for a job typing test?
Many employers use 3 or 5 minute tests. If you are preparing for an assessment, practise at both lengths and quote the lower, steadier score.
Why is my 3 minute score lower than my 1 minute score?
Short tests reward a burst of speed. Over three minutes, harder sentences and small pauses add up, so a drop of a few WPM is normal.
