Typing practice for adults: measure, play, measure again

Games make practice something you return to; tests tell you whether it is working. A simple weekly loop:

  1. Take a 1-minute typing test and note your words per minute and accuracy.
  2. Play ten minutes of one game from the table above, chosen for your weakest skill.
  3. Once a week, take the 3-minute test. Longer tests show whether your speed holds up beyond a short burst.

Why adults plateau, and how games break it

Most adults learned to type by doing it, not by being taught, and settle at a speed that is good enough. The usual causes are the same: looking down at the keys, hitting backspace by reflex, and never using the pinky or ring fingers. A drill can fix these, but few people keep doing drills.

Games change the incentive. When a typo resets the word or lets a monster through, accuracy stops being advice and becomes the way to win. When words keep coming, you stop looking at your hands because you cannot afford to.

Learning to type as an adult

If you still type with two or three fingers, start with the typing lessons before the games: lessons 1–10 teach the home row, the other rows and first words. Lessons 11–13 cover Shift, numbers and punctuation, and lessons 17–20 move on to advanced vocabulary, scientific terms, programming syntax and historical quotes.
